How records work
A case brings related records together for study. Each observation describes what was observed or reported, with its time and place when available. Select a part to see how it supports the record.
Sources include original and processed material. The record can link a processed file to its original, so readers can examine how it was produced.
In the example caseA reading links to a row in the recording file. A quoted passage links to a specific report edition.

Fictional example / Instrument recordings
Each reading includes a time, a unit and a reference to its source. Move the slider to inspect a reading.
Each dot is a recorded reading. Lines connect the readings for reference.
Standard uncertainty expresses the estimated uncertainty as one standard deviation. It is not a guaranteed limit on the measurement error.
The angle shows how far above the horizon the light appeared. This reading cannot tell us its distance or physical speed.
Record details
The standard supports brief reports and detailed research. Open a topic to see the information it can hold.
These topics summarize information available across the standard. Each technical reference explains the fields and requirements for that area.
Missing information
A record can contain a date without a time of day. Keep that distinction visible. A missing time must not become midnight when someone reads or processes the record.
Fictional example / Soil collection
The source supplies a calendar date. It does not supply a time or time zone for the collection.
A value can be recorded even when its measurement uncertainty is unknown. This does not make the measurement exact.
The soil amount is 120 g. Its measurement uncertainty has not been determined.
A reader must still assess whether an account is accurate or a source is authentic. The standard helps by keeping the information available for review. Read about how it records explanations and their supporting sources in Claims.
